How far would you be willing to go for art? For this series of portraits, artists Riitta Ikonen and Karoline Hjorth cover their subjects in ethereal sculptures made from mud, sticks, kelp and other earthy elements. The pair was inspired by the integral role of nature in Nordic folklore and wanted to celebrate the people closest to those traditional tales: The elderly. They collaborated with farmers, fishermen, cosmologists and more in Iceland, Norway — and as far away as Senegal! ”To us, much of Western society is unnecessarily confused when it comes to the usefulness of this absolutely rock-and-roll demographic," says Hjorth, noting that participation is voluntary but can get uncomfortable. "If you have doubts in the beginning, you will definitely regret it by the time Riitta is stuffing cold, wet bull kelp up your nose."
