What would you do if you came face-to-face with this face? 😱 This was photographer Paul Nicklen's first encounter with the fearsome leopard seal on his expedition to Antarctica — and unsurprisingly, he was terrified. "As humans, we like to say penguins are really cute, therefore, leopard seals eat them, so leopard seals are ugly and bad," he jokes in a TED Talk. But the 12-foot, 1,000-pound creature doesn't deserve its reputation as a scary predator, says Nicklen. Over 4 days, this seal became a buddy to him. First, it curiously observed him, then it guarded him against other seals, and finally, it even brought him dead penguins to eat! (Yum?) In fact, during his subsequent dives with leopard seals, Nicklen didn't feel threatened. To see more of his awe-inspiring close-ups of Arctic creatures, head to the link in our bio.
