Video by @Tim Laman. A male Lesser Bird-of-Paradise shakes his incredible plumes and dances around his branch calling out to attract females. I’m sharing this footage shot in West Papua, Indonesia to remind us all about the incredible richness of these forests. Papua’s forests and those across the whole big island of New Guinea, represent the largest intact rainforest in all of the Asia-Pacific and are a global store of carbon, biodiversity, and potential sustainable tourism for the people of Papua if they are protected.

Swipe to see a few behind-the-scenes shots of the small camouflaged perch I built high in the canopy of a nearby tree to film this. There was no place to build a bigger platform, and I didn’t want to disturb the birds, so I sat on a branch, tied in my tripod to another branch in front of me, and hung camo cloth all around me. As you can see in the last shot, it blends in pretty well. All I had to do was climb up the rope in the dark and get in position and wait for the male to come do his thing when it got light!
