The park area protects the southernmost polar bear denning area in the world. Polar bears were declared a threatened species in 2008 under the Manitoba Endangered Species and Ecosystems Act. The act makes it illegal for anyone, Indigenous or resident, to kill a polar bear. Unfortunately in other Canadian provinces and territories polar bear hunting is legal, and roughly 500 polar bear hunting licenses are legally approved each year in Canada. Most of those hunts are staged in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.
