Just four decades ago, Shenzhen was a fishing village next to my birth city of Hong Kong. Today it has risen to become China’s tech hub, nurturing companies including Huawei, drone maker DJI, and internet giant Tencent. I am working on a photo project about the region. Shenzhen will be a traveler’s first stop by train to mainland China from Hong Kong, which is just across the border. From there, Guangzhou, the provincial capital of Guangdong, is just one hour away by train.
