"Our ancestors started building these living root bridges so we can traverse the turbulent rivers during the monsoon," said Bahdrong, a villager living in the remote mountains of northeast India. Dwelling in one of the wettest places on the planet, these tribes have ingeniously developed a way to use rubber plants to make what they call jing kieng jri or a living root bridge. These bridges can survive for hundreds of years and get stronger with age. There are estimated to be about a hundred such bridges spread across the Khasi and Jaintia hills of Meghalaya, but most of them are isolated, and very little is known about them.
