Someone who by all accounts, never hurt a fly during his long, honorable life. He was the first person who ever taught me how to read the poems of Hafez and Rumi, when I was barely 9 years old. Today was a good, normal day for him. He was at home as usual, not suffering from anything apart from old age. He had lunch; my mom’s Sarti Polow, an Azeri pilaf not unlike the Afghan Kabuli polow and the pilafs of central Asia. And after that, he was gone. It was quick, and painless. A type of death one should be quite blessed to get at the end of a long road. I know he is in peace and joy now. If anyone deserved it, it was him. I wish I’d got the chance to say goodbye to him, but to be honest, my only regret is that I can’t be now with my mom, my grandmother, my aunt and uncles, and my many cousins, since most of us are scattered around the world.
