He began painting while working as a stockbroker in Paris, but by the end of his life, he had dedicated himself to capturing the beauty of exotic, untouched landscapes, travelling first to Martinique and Panama, before settling in Tahiti in 1891. Here, Gauguin fell in love with a more rustic style of art. The extremely rare, important woodcut shown here features Hina, the Tahitian Moon Goddess, with whom Gauguin was fascinated. He captured the Goddess in her many forms, and this impression epitomizes his mastery of the woodcut technique, and his love of Tahiti. Though largely unappreciated during his lifetime, Gauguin's works became the subject of huge acclaim after his death. 'Idole Tahitienne' is currently on view in London, and is up for sale as part of out Prints & Multiples auction.
