From my parents' financial investment in my hobby to pay for team fees, private coaching, and travel to competitions around the world, to the time my mom and dad spent driving me to training facilities on the weekends, belaying me for hours in the gym, serving on the board of our local climbing team, and spending vacations waiting for my turn to climb at competitions. From my mom's home cooked breakfasts and dinners that fueled my growing body, to a school that allowed me to miss 60 days of class in one year to pursue my sport. The color of my skin and the shape of my body aligns with brands' traditional acceptance of what a sponsored athlete should look like. As a result, I have the resources I need to focus my mental energy on climbing my hardest. On this Global Climbing Day, and every day, its important that we not only think about how to break down these barriers, but take action to make it happen.
