The sound of the wind rustling through your tent...is that a bear? The tiny buzz of the most annoying mosquito. What's not to love? As my enthusiasm for climbing ramped as a teenager, my family's camping trip frequency increased as well. My memories of camping include that night at Shelf Road when the two flimsy poles on our coach's rental tent snapped in the middle of the night, leaving him wrapped in a pile of nylon. The time my teammate left snacks in our tent, presenting the resident chipmunks with an all you can eat buffet. The time I didn't close the cooler tap and a three hour drive to Rifle ended in an 11pm realization that the truck mattress was soaked. Camping comes with blunders, it's part of the game. Those "oops" turn into funny stories, small deviations from the still perfect camping plan - nights to focus on the details of your surroundings and reconnect with the people you hold dear. If you're able to get out this weekend, whether in the back country or your backyard to celebrate @eddiebauer's National Sleep Under the Stars Night on August 8, you can avoid my blunders by: making sure your tent is properly staked and supported, never ever leaving food in your tent, and always always closing the cooler tap. Also, if that one mosquito is the deterrent to your night under the stars, consider sleeping with ear plugs - that little blood sucker is going to bite you whether you can hear him or not. Might as well get some good zzz's! Photo from one of my favorite camping trips - a week-long tour of Namibia's Skeleton Coast back in 2015, where our only blunder was not bringing enough Peanut Butter m&ms.
