I dressed up as a bride the Halloween after my parents divorce. That was the possibly the first and surely the last time I’d dared to dream of a white gown and happily ever after. What did that even mean, anymore, anyway.

Justin and I were engaged three months after we met. We have never followed the traditional path; we became pregnant, then married, and after that, graduate college and careers. Instead of entering married life flush, we were young and harnessed with debt and responsibility.

On our seventh anniversary, I was struck with the fear, impending doom and sadness that we might not survive past that year, because in my experience, marriages didn’t last past seven years. Life at the time had been complicated by his studies and big bills and raising babies in a crazy city, by ourselves.

Yesterday was our 14th anniversary. We have built a life that doesn’t look like any others we know, and sometimes that leaves us feeling a little fringe. Our early saddles provided stability, strength, and trust, though-even when it felt scary and unknown.

Hard things are (almost) always worth living, and everyone has their own version of happily ever after, especially when we don’t put it in a box first. I am so proud of us.
