I was in the lab yesterday about to drink the liquid for my glucose test when I got the call that Beau had knocked his front, adult tooth out.

I flew out of that office and white-knuckled the steering wheel until I pulled into our driveway to see Beau holding his face.

I’m not sure which felt worse, the shame for the tears streaming down my face and the quaking underneath my skin, or the fact that Beau could see both.

We called Justin, who calmly instructed the following:

Stabilize the child
Find the tooth
Do not touch the root
Rinse off any dirt
Place it in milk
Buckle Beau into the car
Put the tooth back in its socket

I don’t remember there ever being so many cars on the road, or it taking that long to get to his office. I held Beau’s hand behind me and steered with the other until we pulled in to see Justin and his staff calmly smiling, waiting to swoop in and take care of him.

Beau didn’t make a sound since his first horrific screams on the trampoline. His eyes did not even well up with tears again, through the entire procedure of replacing his tooth and the splint his daddy created for him.

It is true that Beau is a warrior. The child who, barely able to walk, taught himself to dribble a soccer ball in Central Park at nine months old. The same who hit a triple with a broken arm, the same who just recently taught himself to drop in off of a quarter pipe.

He will be ok. His gums are mangled, but his front teeth are splinted and we will wait to see if his body accepts them back as it’s own.

I will save our tips to my highlights from my stories, as I would have most certainly bungled the process if it weren’t for Dr. Shyba, Hero Dad.
