By age three, all of our other babies were weaned from breast, bottle and pacifier and toilet trained, except for Nikolas. A couple of weeks ago, we were told that Niko couldn’t return to Montessori after his third birthday until he was potty trained. (Clearly we had missed the fine print somewhere).

Even after daily emotionally exhausting drop-offs, and months of getting him acclimated to his first preschool, we decided that a program that would force our child developmentally wasn’t for us.

The thing is, every single child is different no matter what their genetics are. In my experience, each child needs and deserves to be guided in different ways. Sometimes this means different rules, different boundaries, different ways of communicating. Niko is three, and we are learning that he is has different sensory needs than his siblings and some things, like wearing diapers vs underwear or nothing at all is very stressful to him.

Lots of things have changed since Jack was a baby, but maybe I have most of all. I went from the young novice mom to the older new mom on the preschool playground. Instead of being worried or pressured by outside expectations or developmental guidelines, my 16 years of parenting has taught me one thing for certain: It will all suss itself out in good time.

EDIT: This was not about the school. The school is wonderful and his teachers even moreso. This is about our experience as the parents of six, having our baby removed from his first preschool for not meeting a milestone. It was embarrassing, frustrating, disappointing and ultimately upsetting on Niko’s behalf, but in the end he is right where he was supposed to be all along.

Parenting is incredibly humbling…So I thought I’d share this experience so maybe one person would feel less alone.
