I first visited here while following the Mekong River for @ナショナルジオグラフィック, from source to mouth, in 1989. The lake is a major source of the mighty Mekong. Foreign journalists were not permitted in Yunnan at the time, and there were no tourists. Fishermen and farmers from the Bai minority were the only inhabitants of the small villages along its shores. Today the mild climate, clean air, and pure waters have made the lake a huge tourist mecca.
