Photo by @joshuacogan In Herero origin stories the Omumborombonga, or ironwood tree, is believed to be where the first people emerged from. Ndjambi Karunga (or Makuru) is the ancestral father, and Kamungarunga is the ancestral mother. They are figures of the spirit world known for their generosity.
The trees can reach up to a thousand years old and represent a union of heaven and earth in the mythological realms. The intertwining of the plant, spirit, and human worlds is something seen cross-culturally—expressions of our deep interdependence with the natural world known by indigenous peoples and coded into their stories.
