This act is the most ubiquitous daily devotional practice of Balinese Hinduism. Canang translates as “beautiful purpose”; sari translates as “essence.” It prompted me to think about this phrase and how elegant and simple it is. We all have an essence of purpose that guides us. It may not be our work, or even how we identify ourselves, but it is a deep rudder that guides our being—the thing that we do sometimes without even being aware. When I struggle with insecurity, or even a sense of being stuck or mired in a feeling of underachieving, as I often do, I am reminded that my purpose here on Earth probably has very little to do with what I think it is. In all likelihood that thing, the essence of our gift, happens in a subtle and steady way despite our best efforts for or against it.
