We had crossed the Chambal River, reaching the small town of Sabalgarh, when I met Rambula. She was twenty-two years old and appeared to be the primary heavy lifter of three, hoisting clusters of bakara sticks taller than Rambula, into a grinder to be turned into animal feed. The dust so thick, the veil she wore could hardly have done much good. The two men working the chewing machine did not cover their faces, every crevice of their bodies coated from the flying debris of an already hazy day. After she completed a seemingly endless supply of bakara, I spoke with Rambula. I saw how weathered her gentle hands were, the only part of her not covered in tiny bits of bakara, was her simple gold ring on her left pointing finger. Today while working around the home, I thought of Rambula. The uncountable women, and men, I have met all over the world…beautiful India does not have sole-ownership of the uncountable…who do work with no chance for change. Sharing in reminder this evening, this morning, the heaviness placed upon billions of us across our planet, especially women, boring the pointed brunt of unpleasant labor due to poverty, relentless lack of opportunity, or privilege.
