I never understood the acceptance of caste. Yet it’s everywhere, not only in India. Disguised by different names and acts of oppression. It’s the reason tonight I pre-ordered Isabel Wilkerson’s new book, “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.” Will take you back to over a year ago when I met Arti who was 25. She was married and with three children. As often happens in this country I love, again I experienced the unthinkable, how her family and dozens more where separated from the rest of the population of Harasar in Rajasthan, forced to live on the periphery, without access to electricity or running water...Arti and the other fellow human beings in this outskirts were of the lower caste. The irony, everyone in this periphery were artists, no different than me or any of you who are photographers, painters, musicians, writers, potters, reading at this moment— where Arti lives is an enclave of musicians who entertain for those within the village. You can endlessly comment below if you wish, why this racists oppression is acceptable in India or say, “Yeah, I know, isn’t it sad”, offering all the 🙏🏼 hands or teary faces 😢 you want - I’ve heard it all before, never did it make sense. Every alleged Dalit, every person of color, race, gender and ethnicity I’ve met, were all the same—just people. Always kind, welcoming as Arti was when I spent two days with her family. Thinking of Arti on that beautiful night when she made a most delicious cup of chai, remembering this evening too clearly the many people I’ve met whose opportunities are oppressed by others. It is why I need to read Wilkerson’s book where she takes us into unsettling comparisons between America’s treatment of African-Americans, India’s treatment of caste, and Nazi Germany’s treatment of Jews. No wonder all over the world, we are breaking in discontent. (link in my IG bio if you are interested in Wilkerson’s book)
