Summer slumber: In this colourful painting by Henri Lebasque, a woman escapes the heat of the sun in the shadows of some pines in an idyllic Saint-Tropez setting. A good friend of Henri Matisse, with whom he founded the Salon d’Automne, Lebasque was known as the “painter of joy and light” – a description encapsulated by ‘Saint-Tropez, le hamac sous les pins’. Painted around 1923, this intimate work – in which the viewer captures the artist’s model off guard, the moment she’s falling asleep – is currently available for Private Sale.
