Photo by @francescolastrucci Built in the middle of a rectangular pool of "amrit" (holy water), which is believed to have healing powers and also gives the name to the city of Amritsar, the Golden Temple glows at twilight as a pilgrim admires its splendor. Also known as Harmandir Sahib, the Golden Temple is the most sacred site in the world for Sikhs. Much of India’s Sikh population lives in the state of Punjab and regularly visits the shrine, while most other Sikhs in India and around the world endeavor to make a pilgrimage here at some point in their lives.
Beyond its high historical and architectural value, the place is fully alive with religious reverence and sacredness. The complex has four entrances oriented according to the four cardinal points to symbolize the belief of the Sikh in equality and to welcome all people regardless of religion or provenance into their holy place to experience one of the most tangibly spiritual places in India. As visitors walk in circles around the marble pavement that surrounds the sacred pool, an enchanting music induces a constant yet delicate state of trance. Pilgrims immerse themselves in the water throughout the day and night.
