Photo by @estherhorvath Sea turtle nesting season has started on Padre Island, Texas. Every year around 17,000 Kemp's ridley eggs are collected and incubated at the facility and hatchlings are released back into the ocean. In 1985 Kemp’s ridley sea turtles were almost extinct. “We're lucky that we’ve been able to help so much, and hopefully, together, all of us can help save this species from extinction," says Donna J. Shaver, chief of the Division of Sea Turtle Science and Recovery for the National Park Service in Corpus Christi. Her 40 years of work have been critical in keeping Kemp’s ridley sea turtles from extinction by protecting and preserving the nests at Padre Island National Seashore.
