There are five rhino species in the world. In Africa we find the two best known of the species, the black rhino and the white rhino. The Indian, Sumatran, and Javan rhinos are all found in Asia. All five species are at the edge of extinction because of human exploitation. Contrary to what many think, rhino horns are not prescribed as an aphrodisiac. In the Middle East, the horn is used for traditional dagger handles called “jambiyas,” a type of dagger with a short, curved blade and a medial ridge. Beautifully decorated with jewels, these knives represent a sign of manhood and devotion to the Muslim faith. In traditional Chinese medicine, rhino horn is used in powder form and is dissolved in an effort to treat fever, gout, rheumatism, and snakebites.
