Have you been to Ningaloo reef? Is it on your bucket list? 🐢
.
We’ve spent the last week in a salty, sun drenched state, snorkeling, supping, kayaking and exploring this magical place from sunrise to sunset 🌊
.
Ningaloo is a world heritage area, and the largest fringing reef in the world. It’s home to many species of tropical fish, turtles, sharks, manta rays, dolphins, dugongs, humpback whales, whale sharks and beautiful coral that is essential for a healthy planet. It’s still largely one of the most untouched places and one of the largest biological structures visible from space.
.
The traditional owners of this land are the Yinigudura, the West Thalanyji People, who have lived on this land sustainably for over 30000 years. The Yinigudura name Ningaloo means ‘deep water’ or ‘promontory’. When we holiday on this beautiful land we must respect, preserve and protect the natural environment and honour the history and culture of this sacred place.
.
Recently I shared about the federal government opening up areas of exploration near Ningaloo reef for oil and gas companies to potentially drill. The area is as close as Cottelsoe is to Rottnest island! Over 30000 people petitioned against this which was amazing. It’s unfathomable that this would even be a consideration here, threatening this beautiful, diverse and delicate ecosystem. It would mean deafening underwater sounds to the marine life - whales, dolphins, turtles etc, the risk of an oil spill or rig blowout damaging this world heritage site and all its beauty, magic and life.
.
We must continue to @protectningaloo 🙏🏼💙🐢🐋
.
Right now there is another threat - Subsea 7 is an international company wanting to build gas pipelines through the Exmouth gulf, in a sanctuary area for dugongs, and where humpback whales nurse their calves 🐋 This is a vital area for nurseries and foraging grounds which is why the World Heritage committee recommended Exmouth Gulf be included in the Ningaloo World Heritage area. There is a strong ecological link between the Ningaloo reef and the Gulf.

Please head to the link in my bio to learn more and help support and protect the beautiful Ningaloo reef 🐢
