Working on the "The Last Voices of World War II" has had a large impact on me, I was able to meet some amazing people some whom I will never forget. Mr. Brooks, the oldest living American to have served in WWII. Only 389,292 of the 16 million Americans who served in the war are still alive, and we are continuing to lose more every day. Brooks served in a majority African-American unit stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines. He reached the rank of the private first class. Brooks told of the harsh treatment of the African-American troops by the U.S. military but holds no bitterness. He was proud to serve his country and said he would "do it again in a second, but I might be a bit too slow now." During Hurricane Katrina, Brooks was trapped in his home with water up to his chest. At age 96, he climbed out of his home and swam to the roof of his church to finally be rescued by a helicopter. He is a father to five children and five stepchildren. He has 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. When I asked him the secret to a long life, he told me very simply, "Love. I got nothing but love for people; that is how it worked for me." Lawrence Brooks is certainly very inspirational. It would not have been completed without all the hard work of @jamesbwellford, Gail, Elena, @kfmoran, @christophergarciavalle, Glenn, and all the wonderful writers as well, especially Katie and Andrew. Luda in Russia also went above and beyond helping to make this happen. Special thanks to the #WorldWarIImuseum in New Orleans for all the help. @WWIImuseum」5月20日 2時47分 - robertclarkphoto
