I met Jeannine Burk at the museum, where she works as a volunteer.  She told me her story of hiding in a home in Brussels, Belgium. Her father dropped her off, was arrested by the Gestapo, and later died in a gas chamber in Auschwitz. The home where she was left belonged to a Christian woman who she had never met before. After that day in 1942, Burk did not set foot outside for three years. Now at 80 years of age, she thinks about her time living in hiding every day. She wishes she could have said thank you to the woman who saved her life. The stories I profiled moved me and left me speechless. The strength and courage that regular citizens, not just soldiers, were able to summon to continue to live is amazing. To me, their stories are a bright light in these dark and confusing days.
