British Rifleman, 100 year old #VictorGregg, is one of soldiers featured in the June @ナショナルジオグラフィック Issue on the “Last Voices of World War II”. Gregg was a marksman posted in India and Middle East and later a paratrooper in Italy, before dropping into the Battle of Arnhem in 1944. The brutal fighting involved hand to hand combat, but the Allied attempt to secure a bridge over the Rhine River failed and ultimately led to his capture. He was sent to a German labor camp in Dresden, where he made two failed attempts to escape. He and another POW sabotaged a facility that burned to the ground. For this, he was sentenced to die the next morning. But fate intervened. British and American planes began a bombing campaign on Dresden that blew open a wall for him to escape. Gregg is still haunted by the images of the civilian loss of life from the fusillade of bombs. "These were women and children," he said. "I couldn't believe it. We were supposed to be the good guys." It was an honor to meet just a handful of the veterans and civilians whose lives where for ever altered by the events of #WWII. This weekend and Monday let’s remember what Memorial Day is about. The sacrifice that the Greatest Generation underwent so that we could live and prosper.
