Here is where, upon a large old Javanese sofa by these two of three windows. It’s where I read, sometimes daydream, and each day in recent weeks, usually well past midnight, I write these words and edit the images. It seemed unreasonable to her...why would anyone want to sleep in a room called a living room when upstairs is a perfectly fine bed in a place called a bedroom? Funny the terms humans use in English for rooms forced into conforming. I began to wonder... why do we call a room with a bed, a bedroom? Is a living room the only room we live? When not confined by flight restrictions, closed embassies and airplanes only within borders, some of the best nights of sleep ever, never occurred in a room with a bed. I’ve slept peacefully on benches in dhaba’s (restaurants) in India, had the most vivid dreams sleeping on a tarp in a desert in Ethiopia, and have slept on more living room floors at kind families homes than I can count. I’ve also slept on a kitchen floor in Kabul, like a baby. During this time in the incomplete home where I sleep, every place is where I live. Not one room is for living or is a bed in a room only for sleeping. Each room is limitless. Here, until it feels pleasant to change, by the lamp on a table from China my mother gave me, a glass of water beside, and the trees we saw yesterday from above at the secret attic window, here is where I sleep. Frida loves this bed too.
