I learned so much from Patricia Bosworth as we worked together on this project for Barneys. Mark Lee and Dennis Freedman had dreamed it up, and I was honored to be included. But it was Patricia who reminded us all to present the stories of these individuals in a clear and direct way—to honor the truth of “such fiercely personal accounts of the courage and tenacity it takes to go up against the limitations of society—and triumph.” I wanted to share the film we made together as tribute to Patricia’s sensitive and thoughtful way of being in the world. Working with her was such a gift, and I know the young transgender and gender nonbinary people she interviewed felt the same way. Patricia embodied a kind of compassion and grace that the world needs now more than ever. “In one form or another, some version of family remains everybody’s basic hold on reality.” she wrote. I hope this note and this film finds you and your family safe, and that courage and tenacity will help us to open our eyes again. — B.W.
