This large and vivid work from Paul Signac’s series of views of Istanbul shows the iconic minarets of the Hagia Sophia rise in the distance. The exhilarating city was a long-awaited destination for the artist, an avid sailor who visited between trips to Italy, Greece and the South of France. Bathed in morning light, the brilliant luminosity of the composition is typical of Signac’s late style and is wonderfully effective here in paying homage to the historical legacy and richness of Istanbul, whilst rendering it in a completely fresh and modern way.

Painted in 1907, ‘La Corne d’or. Matin’ was acquired in 1927 in Paris by Gaston Lévy and restituted by the French Government from the Musée d’Orsay to his heirs in 2018. The work is currently on view in our London galleries ahead of making its auction debut in our Impressionist, Modern & Surrealist Art Evening Sale on 4 February.
