Photo by @babaktafreshi | At the remote Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park, California, I was standing next to one of the mysterious sailing stones, looking up to Sirius, the brightest star in Earth’s night sky, and the constellation Orion (top right). On the horizon is the glow of Los Angeles, still faintly visible from 190 miles (300 kilometers) away. These moving rocks, originating from the nearby mountains, are a geological phenomenon. They naturally move along this high-altitude, smooth valley floor on a very thin nighttime surface of ice sheets, driven by wind.
