It was the eve of Nyepi, the day known as the Day of Silence. Giant effigies called Ogoh-Ogoh’s are paraded around the streets at night in every village throughout Bali as a purification of the natural environment, cleansing any spiritual pollutants emitted from the activities of living beings, especially humans…we sure are a messy lot. An Ogoh-Ogoh (pronounced “Ooogo-Ooogo”) can be gigantic in size, taking weeks to create out of paper mache and bamboo. Many are so heavy it takes 20 or more strong people to carry! An entire gamelan orchestra is also in the procession as everyone in the village walks, until nearing midnight when the Ogoh-Ogoh is burned in a massive roar of fire. Then begins the most magical moment…Nyepi. At midnight, no one is allowed out of their homes. No one can speak, except in short whispers. No lights or electricity can be used, nor open flames for the next 24 hours…the international airport in Denpasar is the only airport on earth that literally closes down, accepting no incoming our outgoing flights for twenty-four hours. We all need a day of silence to meditate on our lives, a period of time to collect our thoughts and being.
