It was the first spiritual event I attending when creating the Island of the Spirits. I went with my dear friend and assistant, Bli Wayan Tilik, to the Bali Aga village in Tenganan. This day was the Perang Pandan, an ancient ritual where young men in the village fight each other using thorny padan leaves. I had never witnessed a ceremony like this anywhere before…the boys would thrash themselves till bleeding to show their respect to Dewa Indra, the god of war.
