"Neither of my parents had a college education," writes HuffPost Guest Writer Rachel Bevel. "After high school, my mother became a hairstylist, and my dad was a mail carrier. My grandparents were also trade workers. Money was always an issue for my family, and I recall being aware of our economic status as a child. The option of my parents paying for college did not exist. There were no college accounts or trust funds. We struggled to live, and college was my answer to break the cycle." // Read more at the link in bio. // 📸: Rachel Bevel

This is part of our education crisis!! What these two didn’t have were good money managing models in their lives not fo our schools or culture promote money wisdom. I believe their parents could have lived well on the combined salaries of a mail carrier and a hair stylist if anyone had ever taught them how to manage money. This couple had no budget leadership and nor did their parents and so they did what others do with ignorance. Financial ignorance is passed down, just like diet and lifestyle. This country suffers from a lack of real life education and personal/spiritual growth & development. And yes, they are about to get that education the hard way. May you find peace and realization and compassion for yourselves. It’s $, it’s not your health. I hope you can get some counseling and learn to manage things as they are. Maybe write a book about the journey... may you know freedom and compassion and loving kindness for self & others. 🙏🏼💞✌🏽🌟🌷

While I agree overall costs are too high for college, several poor choices were made along the way here, and now here you are. Community college? English?? Going into debt to get a degree in English - jobs are scarce and few. Graduate school to fill an emotional void? You all signed on the dotted line every time you took a new loan. Loans are required to be paid back. Best of luck moving forward, but those are your loans, and you will have to pay them off, which will take budgeting and determination. Look into Dave Ramsey - he has help thousands of people learn how to get control of their finances.

Sorry to hear that.
By the way, most reach people are college dropouts. I guess they are quick learners to learn in calculus class there is a better way.
I will stir the pot now, all you what looking to get you college loans to dropped by the government take a look in the mirror. Ask your self, why I didn't take a finance class? What I can do today to make better for my self? You are college graduate studied critical thinking, research and so on. Do something and don't wait for someone helps you. It's called hard work. 😂😂😂😮

So "According to the College Board, the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2017–2018 school year was $34,740 at private colleges, $9,970 for state residents at public colleges, and $25,620 for out-of-state residents attending public universities." And $718,000 ÷ 2 is $359,000. That would mean each parent would need to go to school for over 10 years to reach this amount of debt. How can one go to school for over 10 years and not find a job? They either picked a useless major or (more likely) they are liars.

I feel their pain as these stories are more common now a days. Most of us are taught that an education can open doors but are unaware of the financial stress. This couple, like many young people, need some financial literacy. They also need to understand that the good liked they see on Facebook and Instagram is not all what it’s cracked up to be. Tune out and focus on yourselves and your debt.

Nobody is punishing you for pursuing the American Dream. Otis simply did not apply common sense to his decision making, and seems to be discontented with life. He did a biology degree, then an MBA and is now doing dental school. Unless you have scholarships or are a trust fund baby, the subsequent decisions after the first degree make zero financial sense.
