This. 👆Alexis Ohanian wrote an emotional essay for @nytparenting on why men, and all caregivers, need parental leave. After his daughter’s birth, Ohanian took the 16 weeks of paid paternity leave he was granted at Reddit. “Serena and I were lucky enough to have help at home and many other advantages working in our favor. But even with all of that privilege... it was still incredibly difficult." He pointed out that the U.S. is the only industrialized country that doesn't require some form of paid family leave. “Getting dads (and in turn, families) off on the right foot begins at birth, and it can’t just be up to individual businesses to ensure that happens." So true. // 📷: Getty Images

Dont understand how america is so behind the norm on this. Here in the uk we get 52 weeks maternity leave (of which 39 weeks are paid and most companies choose to top this pay up to full salary for a period of time). Dads currently get 2 weeks paid paternity leave (should be much higher). We also have the option for parents to share the 52 weeks usually applies to maternity between them as shared parental leave: providing the mother had the first 2 weeks as legally they're unable to work for this time following birth. Its unbelievable that a country that believes itself to be the leader of the free world, land of opportunity doesnt provide job security and paid leave for parents

@king_earl369 That’s the problem. It’s not equal at all. There isn’t anything. No one gets to take time off work for their families and get a pay check. But until you have a child, truly have one inside you and carry it for 10 months and then have to be there every 2 hours to feed it,m for the next 5-12+ months, you can’t say it’s equal. Because it’s not. Babies don’t need their Dads like they need their Moms to survive. They need their Dads to be there for support and love, sure. But it’s different and to say it could ever be the same is short sighted and frankly, not giving enough credit to the woman who helped to create that child.

@jayc1502 Because this country is all about money; keeping the rich wealthy and the poor at the bottom. The priorities have never been about taking care of our people. Thankfully I have a job that pays 100% for all medical and paid time off plus profit sharing and 401K. Not many can say that so I feel incredibly fortunate. But the philosophy of the "American Dream" is to work until you are eighty. The people here live to work versus working to live. I take vacations every other month so that I enjoy life.

@ceciread you are dismissing the father who also helped create the child. When it comes to womens rights and progress everyone is for it, it's now time for men to catch up in Equality. I disagree, i believe the male figure is just as or more important than the female. Mothers have not been doing their jobs and have been raising mass shooters and other maniacs, it should now be the father who is their childs primary figure. Let the mother give birth and send her back to work, moms have failed America

@cinemalover9161 Yes!! Dads need paid leave?!? What about mothers?! Aren’t we the ones that have to feed the kid? I would give my soul to be able to not pump at work! I would love to be able to stay at home with my babies for longer than a few months in order to spend that precious time with them, but women can’t do that because we don’t have paid maternity leave. We are the only first world country left that doesn’t have paid family leave. This is a problem.

I had weeks and of weeks of sick days I was t allowed to use for FMLA on my job. I was only allowed to use regular paid time off. And I worked at a hospital at the time. We were insured by my wife’s company at the time, and we had to pay our entire insurance premium out of pocket during her leave which was unpaid, and she was also working in healthcare. The entire health care industry in America is a joke.
