At the heart of the portfolio is an exceptional impression of one of Edvard Munch’s most famous motifs, ‘Angst’. Considered a variation on ‘The Scream’, the subject was the first colour lithograph ever produced by Munch, who went on to become one of history’s most prolific and successful printmakers. Published in 1896, the portfolio was the brainchild of Parisian art world maestro Amrboise Vollard. One of history’s most illustrious art dealers, collectors, patrons, and publishers, Vollard included lesser-known and non-French artists such as Munch in the album – a radical decision for the time. First published in an edition of 100, this is the only known complete example still in existence. It was acquired in Paris in the 1920s, and has remained with the same family ever since.
