We are taking a look back at the world’s greatest and largest #cat painting this #InternationalCatDay, which sold in our #NYC salesroom in November 2015. It is safe to say that San Francisco millionaire Kate Birdsall Johnson might have been the greatest cat enthusiast in US history. In 1891, she commissioned Austrian artist Carl Kahler to create a painting of 42 of her 350 much-loved cats. The felines lived with her on a 3,000-acre residence near Sonoma where they were cared for by a dedicated staff. Kahler having established his career as a painter of horse racing scenes had never painted a cat before. He spent the next three years sketching her cats in a variety of poses, ultimately becoming acquainted with their individual personalities and traits. The culmination of his work was this large-scale six feet tall, eight-and-a-half feet wide, painting weighing 227 pounds. Her husband lightheartedly titled the work ‘My Wife’s Lovers.’ In 1949, Cat Magazine glowingly declared it “the world’s greatest painting of cats.” More recently, the painting went on public display at @portlandartmuseum in 2016 in partnership with the @oregonhumane, raising awareness of cat adoptions. #SothebysEuropeanArt #CatsOfInstagram #meow #catpeople #CarlKahler #catpainting😻
