@okaly0 It's called that because a guy missed it! The cape was named on April 12, 1788, by British fur trader John Meares who was sailing south from Nootka Island, Canada in search of trade. After a storm, he turned his ship around just north of the Cape and therefore just missed the discovery of the Colombia River, which is a pretty important river in Washington. Thus, the disappointment part of the Cape's name reflects his chagrin at just barely missing the river! :]

Drew... Cape Disappointment is in Ilwaco, Washington (not Oregon). This spot is known locally as "dead man's cove," as bodies sometimes were found there after shipwrecks. It's on USCG property, but accessible to the public on foot (an offshoot from the road up to the lighthouse).

@mila_maldita Named by a fur trader looking for the mouth of the Columbia River. Turned his boat around (north) in a storm at this headland and named it such. Had he gone just beyond it he would have been at the mouth
