What started as a peaceful protest became a broad repudiation of Chinese control. Hundreds of thousands of people marched to protest the Hong Kong government on a holiday that marks Hong Kong’s return to China from British rule. Elsewhere in the city, protests took a destructive turn in the early morning and clashes with riot police wielding batons and pepper spray left protesters injured. By the afternoon, one group of demonstrators had used a steel cart to break through the glass facade of Hong Kong’s legislature and worked for hours to move deeper into the building, destroying surveillance cameras and spray-painting messages like "Release the Righteous” over the walls. @lamyikfei shot these photos. deer_unnie During the occupancy of the Legislative Council, due to the difficulty to deliver resources inside, young people had no choice but to go to the restaurant of the building to get something to drink, photos then show that they all put money in the fridge in return. They also put warning signs to remind others to protect antiquities in the building. In order to help more people catch the last MTR train (=tube in HK) and avoid tracking of personal information by using octopus cards (similar to Oyster Card), people put coins onto the ticket machines, just to make sure all people, especially those who are only 15-17 years old, can buy single-way tickets asap and go home safely. Please try to think about which thing is more catastrophic for freedom in Hong Kong now. The government which doesn't keep the promise to protect Hong Kong's democracy and legal system, OR the damage of a few glass doors and portraits of incompetent government officials yesterday? jedimastersamm Lol people advocating for peaceful protest need to ask MLK how that worked out for him. He was shot before his March for the Poor. His followers went on for a 6 month sit-in that got them nothing. White people didn't become the owners through peace and love. You want an example of what a peaceful demonstration gets you from China then look no further than June 4th, 1989. Please don't be so ignorant of history by advocating for peace and love when it gets you nothing but walked over...Or in the case of Tiananman ran over by tanks until your body is washed away into the gutters.

glitteraimz By using the language you use here, painting the protestors as violent and destructive, you turn the world against a group of mostly nonviolent and nondestructive people who are fighting for autonomy. The protests turned "violent" because police used force, and they occupied the legislative building but they also did things like leave money in the canteen for the food they took. This is not a mob, this is an amazing example of citizens standing up for what they want from their government and they deserve our support and respect.

U mistake those 550000 people who are marching while in fact nobody would celebrate the 22nd anniversary since the extradition law and disgusting acts by the politics.
