We’ve known for centuries that we are what we eat. Whether in the form of an executive lunch, a working-lunch-in-a-hurry hot dog or a sad desk salad, lunch is intertwined with our working lives and hence our finances and ambitions: We are where we eat, who we eat with, who we avoid. For some people, lunch time is an opportunity to flee the office. Others use the time to catch up on crushing workloads, to impress unimpressible bosses with their drive, or to bond. Our photographer William E. Sauro took this photo. Click the link in our bio to spend your lunch break journeying through more than 50 years of midday meals. #nytarchives

When I worked in offices I wouldn’t work during lunch break, cuz it’s MY time, but the break is never really long enough to go anywhere and actually enjoy, either ?. Plus when you get back it’s so soul crushing— coming back from the glorious out doors to the over air conditioned office and having to sit back down at your desk after a taste of freedom lol. Almost better for your sanity to just stay ? we need to be like France with a 2 hr plus lunch break you can actually enjoy and unwind a bit before going back

I was an import specialist for a Japanese freight forwarding company, working to get our customers imports to them when they want them. Sometimes I would skip lunch to do this, and the boss would scold me for skipping it. I would tell her she could treat my pay as if I did take lunch, and she said she couldn’t. I would ask if what I did was important, she had no answer. I continued to work for the customers, my ultimate boss. No appreciation was shown by my boss.

American people are overworked and stressed. You will not see people in Europe having lunch at their desk. You will also not going to see so many obese people anywhere in the world. Americans know how to work, unfortunately some don’t know there is life beyond work. Hope more people will realize it and find some balance.

And as a reminder, for DECADES we have been pumping hormones & steroids into cows, chickens, & hogs. Toss in the birth control pills and you have quite the mix. If we are what we eat, and we are, then you HAVE to consider how this has altered our DNA... so quit persecuting what we created!!

My “sad” desk lunches involve chewing on some salad in my classroom until students show up to chat. They need to bend an ear, find a respite from the cafeteria, or just occupy space with a friendly face. Call it what you will, but that’s a “working” lunch I’ll never give up.
