Tonight in London, powerful portraits by established artists commanded the saleroom, with auctioneer Oliver Barker hammering down £69.1 million of Contemporary Art. The sale was led by Francis Bacon’s tormented ‘Self-Portrait’ from 1975, created after the death of his lover and greatest muse George Dyer, which reached £16.5 million. Jenny Saville’s ‘Shadow Head’ towered alongside and achieved £4.18 million.

In its auction debut, Albert Oehlen’s gigantean self-portrait from 1998 sold for £6 million, establishing a new record for the artist at auction. Created in tribute to the artist’s friend and collaborator Martin Kippenberger, the portrait came to auction ahead of Oehlen’s major forthcoming survey at the @serpentineuk, for which we are proud to be a supporting sponsor. Further outstanding results for German artists included a new record for Wols; the rare work is one of just 80 paintings he created in his lifetime before his premature death at the age of 38.
