The U.S. has the highest over-all health-care costs in the developed world. Desperate patients increasingly turn to crowdsourcing platforms like GoFundMe for help, and in a competitive market, only the most heartbreaking stories are likely to get funded. Tap the link in our bio to read about how crowdsourcing has become a last resort for many. Illustration by @javier_jaen; photograph from Shutterstock.

My hubby is American, we raised the kids in the US but when our older flew the nest, we moved back to EU. We have public (as well as private, if we want) heath care. I had two major surgeries in public hospital in Warsaw...excellent care, no drive through surgery, not a single bill came to us. It's a single payer system, premiums are mandatory deduction from your salary but nobody is left outside, even if they don't work. Sure, its not Perfect, my mom had to wait for catharact surgery, but sooo much better! As to costs..our son has to have a jaw surgery . Costs ca. $4k: The same exact surgery in US: $40k

Alot of peeps from the United States come to Mexico to have their medical needs dealt with. It's a far better and cheaper choice. Doctors don't have the ongoing thought of being sued by everybody, so they can direct all their attention to what matters most, their patients and doing a damn good job at it. This isn't new, and it's ongoing. The U.S. needs to rethink their whole culture. It's very distorted.

Pay Medicare through your taxes and two good things happen: you're covered even if your medical bills exceed the amount you paid in taxes and secondly, you know others who previously might not have had the money to pay medical bills will still be covered. Your co-workers, neighbors and employees won't be sick and suffering for lack of funds. Who wants to live among/around sick folks?

Do you KNOW WHAT it takes to be a Dr. Or nurse......do you know how MUCH a frivolous law suit costs...do you KNOW what state of the art equipment we have in our beloved US....or that no emergency is turned away or kicked out of ICU....we pay for each other as it should be....need a cataract extraction in Canada....you'll go blind Waiting

so do we pay 5,000 a year in deductibles if we need it or 5,000 a year in taxes. Your choice. Medicare still cost $$$ . It isnt free healthcare. We pay tax into it, then we have monthly premiums and deductibles for outpatient services. Dont let any politician tell you its FREE!
