Itzler believes that what we really want is to feel proud of ourselves, and his chief method for instilling pride is to set physical challenges so difficult that you must discover something new within yourself to meet them. The power of mind-set is a sacrament. He insists that, in the right frame of mind, he could outrun his friend LeBron James in a 100-mile race. “LeBron, Kobe, Michael Jordan—I’d beat them all at their peak,” he said. “One, I want it way more than any pro athlete would. What do they have to gain by going through all that suffering to beat a 55-year-old guy? And, two, the 100-miler comes down to will.
