The brightly lit #night scene is centred around a characteristic wooden house from the #artist’s native #Vitebsk, in front of which a #horse-drawn #chariot pulls a man towards the #sky. The imagery of a horse leaping into the unknown evokes #Byzantine and #medieval imagery, and was also a favourite theme of #icon #painters. Here, Chagall imbues the motif with unique and highly personal significance.
