I travelled there for the first time last year and so every image of a Kamchatka brown bear that I have subsequently posted on my Instagram page was captured in just 6 days, all with a 200-400mm lens! Kamchatka remains the most remarkable place that I have ever visited, not only because of the wonderfully welcoming Russian people but also, obviously, because of the bears. Here they exist in the highest densities on Earth and it certainly feels like it when you’re there, at all times we could see up to 20-25 bears with a single sweep of our eyes 😳. It’s impossible to say for how long these opportunities might exist, one of the reasons why the ‘I’ll photograph it next year’ mentality can be such an error of judgement, one that I avoid myself at all costs. Of course the opportunities might well remain, and I for one certainly hope that they do but Kamchatka has a very special place in my heart and I hope that this image will illustrate why. Nevertheless, the world wide web is full of ‘experts’ and so for those that want to dive in with the ‘you’re too close’ grandstanding 😴 then out of sight to my right is our Russian guide, a guide who has lived alongside these exact bears for some 15 years. Meanwhile the image is being taken by a good friend of mine, Grandad Bazza who was with me for this trip of a lifetime, not to mention the other guests and our wonderful translator Zhenya. We sat quietly on this river bank for 3 full days, spellbound by what we were privileged to witness, often surrounded by bears that were quietly going about their business, gorging on salmon and occasionally having minor disagreements about whose salmon was whose.
