Executed during one of Edgar Degas’ most prolific periods, ‘Deux danseuses’ from circa 1891 is an exquisite pastel featuring the artist’s most recognizable subject of ballet dancers — a theme which would come to define Degas and his later works. Born in Paris to an aristocratic family, Degas frequented the city’s dazzling operas, ballets and circuses and became captivated by the spectacle of live entertainment, which consequently served as a source of inspiration throughout his career.
