A high school paper wrote about a senior who makes her own pornographic videos. It set off an uproar over free speech, feminism and student journalism, all before the piece was even published. When the Lodi Unified School District learned about the plan to publish the story, it demanded to review the profile and threatened to fire Katherine Duffel, the high school paper’s longtime faculty adviser, seen here. But The Bruin Voice, the student newspaper at Bear Creek High School, refused to hand it over. The district ultimately gave in, but not before the battle drew nationwide attention and launched debate about censorship.
