The intense blue beam of light pointing skyward from the Luxor Hotel is one of the most recognizable Las Vegas sights. But blue wavelengths are among the worst for sky glow: They bounce and scatter in the atmosphere, brightening the night sky even more than warmer-colored counterparts. According to the International Dark Sky Association (IDA), every year millions of birds die colliding with needlessly illuminated buildings and towers, and millions of other migrating birds are disturbed and confused on their path, due to intense lighting pointed at the sky or horizon.
