As refugee camps expand and the forest shrinks for development, elephants risk running out of food and the potential for inbreeding grows. About 38 elephants are trapped in the forest next to the Kutupalong camp, which blocks elephant migration routes. Even at the Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary, next to the Kutupalong camp, development has leveled some parts of it. To make room for refugees, last summer Bangladesh cleared 10,000 acres of forest and leveled over a hundred hills, like those in the Ukhiya forest area around Cox’s Bazar.
