Photos by @estherhorvath | During an Arctic expedition, a helicopter completes a flyover to measure sea ice thickness with an instrument towed underneath. The EM-Bird, as it's called, was built for this expedition by Jan Rohde (first photo), an engineer at the Alfred Wegener Institute. A time-lapse series of sea ice thickness in the Fram Strait and the central Arctic Ocean shows a decrease of 25% over the last 20 years. Follow @estherhorvath more polar science stories.
