This fence, just a mile from the Pacific Ocean, is an effort by Surfrider Foundation volunteers to protect our beaches and sea from pollution. Single-use plastics have created conveniences but even larger challenges for the planet, as what we use doesn’t get recycled nearly as much as we think (just 9 percent in the United States). This leaves vast quantities of plastic in our waterways—and ultimately the ocean—during the 450-year process of breaking down.
